What GEO is and how it differs from SEO

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is optimization for the answers AI models give. Where SEO pushes a site into Google and Yandex search results, GEO pushes your brand into the answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, YandexGPT and Yandex Neuro — exactly where customers now search.
The scenario has changed. People no longer open ten links — they ask a question and get a finished answer that names two or three brands. 85–90% of people see that answer straight "from the model's memory." If you're not in it, the customer goes to whoever was named — and classic SEO never catches this.
How GEO differs from SEO technically. SEO works with the search results page: links, behavioral signals, technical on-page optimization. GEO works with which brands an AI model names in its answer — that means different algorithms and different levers of influence. A Princeton study showed that adding expert citations raises content visibility in generative answers by 40.9%, and statistics by 30.6%. These are GEO levers, and they aren't on any SEO checklist.
How to measure your own visibility inside AI. Generate real, non-branded queries from your niche — phrased the way actual people ask them — run them through the AI models, and count share of voice: how often and in what context your brand gets named. The key is to measure honestly, with two numbers: "seen by name" and "found without the name." A single pretty number hides the real picture.
One thing specific to the Russian market: Western GEO tools (Otterly, Profound, Peec) don't see YandexGPT, Yandex Neuro or GigaChat — and that's exactly where the Russian-speaking audience sits. For a Russian brand, a measurement without the Russian AI models is incomplete.
At Symbiosis Lab this methodology is packaged into the GEO Optimisation product: automatic measurement across 6 AI models, two honest numbers, and a plan built from concrete levers backed by academic sources. The first measurement is free.
